Meet the women who have captured his attention, the mother who taught him the power of words and the weathered resonator guitar named Mercy that remains his truest companion.
This is where Max opens the journal for the first time.
EPISODE ONE: THE SONG I DIDN’T KNOW
A mysterious stranger walks into Poor Monk’s Juke Joint and asks Max to play a song he has never heard.
When Max’s hands somehow find the melody, the stranger reveals that the song once belonged to Max’s missing uncle—and that Mercy may be connected to an old family debt that has finally come due.
ABOUT MAX’S JOURNAL
Bellwood, Mississippi. 1932.
Max Henson spends his days taking whatever work he can find and his nights playing blues wherever somebody is willing to listen—sometimes where they are not.
After the music stops, Max returns to his boarding-house room, opens the journal his mother gave him and writes about everything that happened that day: friendships, family, romance, music, danger and the truths he cannot bring himself to speak aloud.
Through Max’s narration, each short episode unfolds as a collection of cinematic memories—glimpses of the people he encountered, the choices he faced and the secrets slowly connecting his family to the mysterious history of his guitar.
Some stories are sung. Others are written. Max does both.
